You can modify the variable life policy within certain guidelines. The items that can be modified include:
- the death benefit
- the amount of the premium payment
- the timing of the premium payment
The most important component of the variable life insurance policy is your ability to direct where net premiums are invested. Once the costs for insurance protection and company expenses are met, the balance of the premium goes directly into investment options selected by you. Typically you can invest in:
- growth stock acounts
- bond accounts
- balanced accounts
- real estate accounts
- money market accounts
With this type of policy you have the advantage of professional money managers (through the insurance company) and the opportunity to choose the investments that match your overall financial goals and tolerance for risk.
The ultimate value of your account, either at death or at retirement, will depend upon the performance of the investment options chosen. Growth is not guaranteed.
As with other permanent life insurance contracts, you can borrow against the cash value of the policy. The interest rate charged to borrow is generally lower than market rates.
